Friday, September 30, 2005 7:00 pm UPDATE ERROR. Gentleman from Kernersville reports that I may have made a mistake. Well, - I did! On 9/29/05 I erred by reporting that Flounder have to be 15 inches. Wrong! For Flounder, it's 14 inches total length established by the NC Department of Marine Fisheries and not by the Blue Marlin Daily Fishing Report. The maximum amount of Flounder kept (14 inches or longer) is 8 per day. Sorry for the typo. Thank-you Kernersville! 8:30 am Southeast wind slowed fishing down last night. Two fishermen on surf close to our Blue Marlin Apartments were not catching too many fish. Live sand fleas were the choice bait, and were very plentiful. This morning I went back out to the ocean. The waves action was large and fast! 5 foot waves were busting right onto the beach. The winds were blowing about 12 knots from the northeast. These conditions show potential signs for better catches. Gasoline Prices: Seem to be about the same. Water temperatures at the Blue Marlin surf:78 degrees. Today tides HI tide 5:59AM and 6:15 PM AM, LOW tide is at 12:07 PM. Stay tuned! Thursday, September 29, 2005 9:30 am Lots of Bluefish reports. Sizes are vary from 10 to 25 inches in length. Several fishermen are saying they are having to throw back many Flounders that are just a inch or so shy of the legal 15 inch minimum length. Kure Pier, the surf plus both ends of the island are doing real well. We finished cleaning and dressing all of the Popeye Mullets this morning. This catch produced good size meaty fillets! Next, we will begin salting them down. I like to recycle the fish, so-to-speak. This morning when I went to dump the guts, backbones and heads back into the bay I was blocked off. Apparently NBC has been making a movie down at the south-end boat landing. I was able to dump the fish guts back into the water at another place. On the other hand, I would have been very upset if I had traveled a long distance to make use of the bay only to see that the only boat landing to the bay was closed for a movie. The sign reads "Boat Landing Closed, September 28 & 29th." (Remember that funny Chevy Case move where he and his family traveled a 1000 miles over several days only to arrive at the fun park and then suddenly discovering that it was closed for some silly reason? Remember the police coming to get him thinking they had a terrorist on their hands? The talented actor John Candy also stared in this great comedy.) The lights, camera and action man should be gone tomorrow. Gasoline news: Prices have pasted the $3.04 mark at one station on the Island. Tide and water temperature readings start tomorrow. Stay tuned! Wednesday, September 28, 2005 10 :30 am Back by popular demand, Fresh Local Popeye Mullets! Over the summer we have sold repacks of dressed mullets from Core Sound area of North Carolina. The quality of the fish is good and the price is right for the customer. Now that cooler weather and waters are arriving, we are able to get local Popeye's from places in Litter River, S.C. all the way up to Harkers Island, N.C. Here in town yesterday, a stray Spots would show up from time to time. Many local believe the waters are still a bit too warm. Yesterday afternoon, Karen and I went up to the end of Canal Avenue in Carolina Beach. Freeman Park, "The North End" had several dozens 4x4 on the surf. Water temperature: 80 degrees. Gasoline news: Prices are mixed all over the place. Stations that had the lowest gas prices last week, have the highest this week. Over all, price have risen about 8 cents per gallon in the past 24-36 hours. ($2.869- $2.999) Stay tuned! Tuesday, September 27, 2005 9:30 am Slow morning for fishermen. Yesterday afternoon, Kure Beach Fire Department served as spotters for a Catamaran sailboat rescue. Apparently, the boat turned over approximately 7/8 of a mile east of the 900 block of Fort Fisher Boulevard South. Later a rescue boat assisted in getting the boat and crew back to shore. Stay tuned! Monday, September 26, 2005 4:00 pm Bluefish and Pinfish are making the news at this hour. Winds have picked up today. Every time I visit the beach, the waves are washing straight in. Other news: The political season has picked up its pace here in town. Please, wish me the best! Gasoline news: Big price difference in Wilmington, Carolina Beach and Kure Beach. Low $2.799 - High $3.39. So, you better shop around. (On the Island, prices are running $2.84-$2.95 for regular.) Stay tuned! Sunday, September 25, 2005 5:30 pm Bluefish reports are still coming in. Bottom rigs and Red Headed Got-Cha pugs are doing fine for catching Bluefish. Here, the ocean water is a deep dark green with small white caps. Surfers and swimmers are enjoying the first weekend of fall. I made contact with one of our commercial fisherman. He reports Popeye Mullets are all along Topsail Sound. That about 40 miles north of Carolina Inlet. We should have Fresh Whole and Fresh Salt Mullets this weekend. Head down to first bay at night, just past Fort Fisher, and one may see lots of bait fish jumping. Gasoline news: No noticeable change in price since yesterday. Stay tuned! Saturday, September 24, 2005 11:30 pm Not as busy today as we would have liked. Winds were from the south around 7 knots. Bluefish were the most caught fish today. Some fishermen are restocking their Flounder Gigging Gear. Overall, today seemed very slow for a beautiful Saturday. Gasoline news: Prices have risen around 10-15 cents per gallon in places. I saw a $2.839 at one gas station. Stay tuned! Friday, September 23, 2005 Happy Birthday to someone special! 12:30 pm Hot weather has hit the beach again. Winds are close to calm, thus magnifying the heat index to plus 90 degrees. No fishing reports at this time. Yesterday afternoon, our Mud Minnows arrived from Calabash, NC. Last night, Karen and I rode down to the bay south of the Fort Fisher Ferry landing. We were very happy to see hundreds, I mean hundreds of bait fish jumping and hundreds of One Armed Bandits, sometimes called fiddler crabs running all over the sand, rocks and bay-mud. Looks like last weeks hurricane wind-blow, got older water out of the bay and new water back in. This action helped the marine life. This is why many believe that reopening Corncake Inlet will be an asset to the area. Stay tuned! Thursday, September 22, 2005 Noon Late morning, I walked out onto the beach behind the Blue Marlin Apartments. The tide was high. The ocean was really beautiful as 4 and 5 foot waves washed ashore under a clear and sunny blue sky. The waves broke right onto the beach. This is due to a deep drop off next to the surf. Several ghost grabs have made new holds in the sand since last week's big wind blow from Hurricane Ophelia. Today the sea water is a dark Blueish-green and the air is filled with the fresh smell of ocean salt. At high tide, there is more than 50 feet of beach. Kure Pier had about 30 folks fishing around 11:30 am. I called into the North Carolina State Recreational Site at Fort Fisher. They report that "During Hurricane Ophelia, there was minor damage on the south end and the bay did "wash over" into the ocean. Sand fences and signs had to be repaired or replace in some areas." Many on the beach, including us, were sorry to hear that Corncake inlet did not reopen. New Hurricane news. Wish the folks along the Gulf Coast the best as they prepare for Monster-Hurricane Rita. One of the staff members reports that Bluefish are biting Shrimp on bottom rigs. Gasoline news: I saw one gas station's price on a gallon of gas at $2.699. Stay tuned! Tuesday, September 20, 2005 Noon Gentleman reports that his vacation ultimately produce some fish. On his last day here, he caught several Bluefish and a good size Red Drum. He was fishing near the Old Dow Intake. That just north of our Blue Marlin Apartments. Hurricane/Gasoline news: Several gas stations that acquire minor damage during the hurricane have reopened. Stay tuned! Monday, September 19, 2005 5:55 pm "A slow day for catching fish" is the news we are hearing. Winds were mostly out of the south, south-east at 12 knots all day. Met a nice fisherman from Kernersville, NC. He reports he caught two small Bluefish. Gasoline news: Price per gallon has drop to $ 2.689 at Monkey Junction. (That's 10 miles north of here.) Hurricane news: I have seen several piles of tree limbs and brushes stacked up beside many roads in the county. Many leaves attached to the trees are turning brown. This is due to the high wind speeds that blistered the leaves and pine needles as Hurricane Ophelia's eye-wall passed thru the area. Stay tuned! Sunday, September 18, 2005 10:30 am GOOOOOD SUNDAY MORNING! (A good sermon and fellowship is the nicest way to start the week off!) Fishing reports were mixed last night. Some folks caught plenty of fish while others came in empty handed. Head boats were not has productive has one seasoned fisherman reports. "Usually after a hurricane we do real well. This time, the boat captain was off his normal catch." Others, who caught lots of Flounders, Pompanos, Bluefish and Croakers, said that 3 hours before high tide to 1 hour after was when they caught their fish. Gasoline news: Price have dropped to $ 2.79 in places. Hurricane news: In early September, there is always something brewing in the tropics. Don't let that upset you. Large Flounder and Pompanos by the dozens were haul in. Fishing coolers are in big demand along with Ice. Heat index is pushing up in the upper 90's. 10:15 am Our lady fishermen returned this morning asking "Does anybody down here on the Island clean fish?" My Dad was in the shop and he pointed these girls to the Carolina Beach's boat docks. Dad said these girls had more than 30 fish. Flounder, Pompanos and other fish. Hurricane news: The water around the Carolina Beach Lake retreated yesterday afternoon. Before, you could not drive down Lake Park Blvd. (US 421) Stay tuned! Friday, September 16, 2005 Update 7:00 pm Pompanos reports are coming in. Shrimp is the bait of choice. Frozen Sand Fleas are catching Red Drum. Bait fish are running in the surf at the north end. After a big wind blow, sand fleas have a way of getting scares. I will keep a lookout for them. 10:00 am Hot weather has returned. This weeks "Island Gazette" newspaper has a picture of the boat landing south of the Fort Fisher ferry landing during the eye of Hurricane Ophelia. One may see how empty the bay got. When Karen and I were there, the bay was 'nearly empty' except for the water in a small creek running down the middle of the bay. Gasoline news. Prices are dropping. ($2.86 - $2.97) Stay tuned! Thursday, September 15, 2005 7:00 pm Our bait box is bare and fresh bait is on its way. Around 5:15 pm this afternoon, our electrical power came back on to our shop. This morning all electrical power returned to our apartments. Gasoline news: Several gas stations lost power. On the island, four gas stations are out of gas. There is gas south of us. In Fort Fisher and at the Kure Beach stop light one can get gas. North of the Island there is plenty of gas. Hurricane news: 'Eye encounter number 6 for me.' The category one hurricane did minor damage. Roof shingles are in the streets along with phone and cable TV wires. There are a few big trees blown over. Pine, Oak and Palm trees. Several gas station canopies and business signs were blown over. Karen and I manned a fire department road block last night and into the morning. Little tired right now. Stay tuned! Thursday, September 15, 2005 2:30 pm We have reopened. Fishermen are here! We are resetting up our bait coolers and merchandise. Our apartment have electricity at this time. Our shop is running on a personal generator. Yesterday, the bay at the south end was emptied after the left eye wall of the hurricane passed over. The northwest wind blew all the water out of the bay. More news on this shortly. The lake at Carolina Beach overfilled. More information shortly. Come on down.! Tuesday, September 13, 2005 8:45 am We will be close today, Wednesday and Thursday. Local Civil defense officials are preparing for a 48 hour standoff with this slow moving storm. Electrical power is forecasted to fail once sustained winds speeds reach 45 knots. Kure Beach Water Department plans to have the water turned off when electrical power fails. This is to keep the water tower filled with water. Progress Energy, our local power company, will not send line crews out until after the wind speed drop back down below 30 knots. This being the scenario, Kure Beach officials are forecasting a 48 - 72 hour power outage. Next update will be delayed. Stay tuned. Monday, September 12, 2005 Well, Kure Beach finds itself in the crosshairs of another Tropical Storm / Hurricane. This afternoon, a voluntary evacuation went into effect. All guest are encourage to leave with prorated refunds. Stay tuned! Sunday, September 11, 2005 A special day of remembrance. No one has reported back to us with any catches. For the past week, the surf has been very choppy. Yesterday, we sent several fishermen 'and women' to the south end of the island in hopes of finding calmer waters and fish. There, the waters are downwind from our island thus having better protection from this week-long, strong-northeast wind. Hurricane Forecasters are reporting, but I say that "Ophelia has a mind of her own!". Gasoline news. Gas prices 'around here' are about the same as yesterday. $2.979 - $2.999 Stay tuned! Saturday, September 10, 2005 Update 1:15pm Seas are 5 to 6 feet. 10:30am WE ARE BACK. Consistent winds from the northeast has coated layers of salt on Progress Energy's electrical wires. Several blackouts have occurred. I pulled my computer off-line. No fishing reports at this time. Several fishermen and their families have arrived. Winds are from the northeast around 20 knots. Hurricane Ophelia is in the news. Forecasters have landfall on Tuesday September 13, 2005. Location is somewhere between Savanna GA. and the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Snows Cut and the Carolina Beach State park had several runs today. Winds along the surf were not as strong today as yesterday. Local weatherman reports that the 10 knots northeast winds blowing today are in fact from Hurricane Ophelia. Today, Ophelia is suppose to move away from land. Goodwill news: Several evacuees have arrive in the city of Wilmington, NC. Local Salvation Army, Red Cross Chapters, and other faith organizations are routing these good folks to residents who have opened up their homes. Wind speeds have increased to around 20 knots. 2:00 pm Wind speeds have drop to approximately 5-10 knots out of the North East. Yesterday's wind blow was a big one. No fishing reports at this hour. Gasoline reports: $3.09 in Carolina Beach and along South College Road in Wilmington, NC. Stay tuned Labor Day, September 5, 2005 2:30pm Wind update. Strong NE winds 25 knots blowing. 1:45 pm No fishing reports at this time. Head-em up! Move-em out! Today at 1:30 pm there is a mass exodus of folks heading back home. After Labor Day this is a normal event. Most public schools and colleges classes are well underway by now. We do have a few retired grand parents coming in this week. Prime fishing season begins the last week of this month. Look for frost in six weeks. Looks like this is going to be one of the last regular summers for Kure Beach. Word is out that another major motel is closing next week. Two more motels went on the market in late August. The market price for the lots a motel sits on is more than the regular cash flow a motel can earn. Two person stopped by today. Their home was destroyed in last weeks hurricane. They have professional jobs and are in the Wilmington NC area to check things out. Gasoline news: Price of regular gas one mile from here is $3.09. Stay tuned! Sunday, September 4, 2005 3:15 pm Snows cut has many boaters. Several variety of fish seen running and jumping there. Perhaps a school of large Bluefish or maybe early Trout have found their way into the intercostals waterway. Gasoline news: One customer was upset because the price of regular gasoline was only $3.09 here on the island. Only $3.09? He had just filled up north of Wilmington and had to pay $3.89 for the same brand. Gas is available, you just have to shop around and pay the price. Church News: I am happy to report that Karen and I have a wonderful pastor! Today's sermon touched on many topics, especially after last week's Hurricane encounter along the gulf. For us, sharing the Good News together with giving special care donations brought back that "peace that passes all understand". I hope you can find that peace in troubled times! Hot weather has been a pleasure to a hundred or so folks that made the trip to Kure Beach during this gas crunch. Yep. The number of tourist in town are way below what we would normal have on a beautiful weekend holiday. I'm just guessing; 70 % off the normal count. Our lodging facilities are filled with happy guest. However, I see many vacancy signs ON that are normal off this time of day on a Saturday. At 7:00 pm there is plenty of high price gas. Noon Happy Birthday to someone special! Me! Beautiful weather today. Temperatures are approaching 90 degrees. Clear and sunny skies. Many people on the beach and on the Kure Beach Fishing Pier. others stations were open to take their money. Prices ranges for regular were
$3.39 - $ 3.79. Stay tuned! Update 8:15 pm 9 pound Flounder landed in Snows Cut. Dolphin seen jumping at Carolina Beach State Park. Fisher-women believe that these two 10 foot mammals were feeding on shrimp or they discovered a minnow bed. 6 Foot Shark shakes head out of water as he fights his way to freedom from a Kure Pier Fisherman last night. GASOLINE update at 8:15 pm Several cross state travelers are arriving. I questioned all for a gas reports. Gas was everywhere but you got to pay for it. Raleigh reports were as high as $4.10 per gallon, Winston-Salem reports $3.69, Clinton, NC $ 3.49, south of Wilmington, NC $3.19. 9:45 am A very beautiful and quite morning here in Kure Beach. Around 8:30 this morning, I counted 5 persons on the Kure Beach Fishing Pier. Only saw 3 persons on the beach north of the pier. My neighbor came into work this morning. He lives west of Wilmington, NC. About a 28 mile trip. He reports two gas stations out of gas in downtown Wilmington and one gas station closed at Monkey Junction 8 miles north of Carolina Beach. All other gas stations had all grades of gas. Price range of regular was $3.09, $3.11 and $3.29. Local NBC News station WECT-TV reports more gas is on the way. Just expect higher prices until the situation along the Gulf of Mexico gets better. Stay tuned Thursday, September 1, 2005 3:00 pm We have seen nobody fishing today. Dad and I just rode into Wilmington NC. (20 miles north). We saw a gas tanker delivering gas to a Wilco Gas Station, $2.99 per gallon for regular. GoGas Stations are closed. They last sold gas about 20 cents less than average price today. Small lines are forming at the lower price stations while others stations 10 to 15 cents higher are normal. 11:15 am So far, our beach is vacant. We are monitoring the local news as gas price for regular grade are varying from $2.79 to $3.09. There are no shortages reported in the area. Stay tuned |
