Thursday, June 30, 2005 Well folks, I was out of the shop all day today. Playing? No! Painting? Yes! :( From what I hear tonight, our devoted fisherman of yesterday's report did good. 12 nice size fish. Not sure what kind, but from the sound of things, he is enjoying his vacation. He was not staying with us this time, but he was catching his fish right behind the Blue Marlin Apartments. By the way, we have No Vacancy at this time. Ladies fishing the State Park caught Croakers and them same ole small pesky 12 inch Sand Sharks. Yesterdays big rain shower top 4 inches in some places. I suspect that that rain is going to give a kick to the lawn fertilizer. I told Karen to watch out. Growing grass is going to out pace a yacht race! :) :) Stay tuned. Wednesday, June 29, 2005 3:30pm Devoted fisherman and family man returns to Pleasure Island. During a welcome heavy rain shower, this gentleman stopped in for a fishing report. The latest reports I told him was what I reported yesterday, June 28. Then he shared some of his fishing tips. "When fishing for Whiting or Pompanos, use a #2 or #4 short shank Eagle Claw Double-Snelled fishing hook". By accident, he had picked up some Single Eagle Claw Snelled hooks. I was unaware that Eagle even made Single Snelled hooks. Also, "make sure the hook is complete covered so the fish can not see the hook". Many times he uses two or more sand flees to hide the hook. Another requirement, "make sure there are no rear-barbs on the hooks". Then after one cast, "place the rod tips pointing to the water and not up hi in the air". He wants his tackle to lay flat on the bottom. He prefers to not use a sand spike but some sort of table to lay his rods on. The tackle he uses is designed to fish off a pier or boat, but that does not matter. "Whiting and Pompons feed off the bottom". Other news: Just guessing, I suspect we have had over 1 & 1/2 inches of rain today. Public works department came by today and installed the 15 minute parking sign in front of our shop. The Kure Beach Town Council passed an ordnance for the B2 and B3 business districts of town, May 2005, due to the rapid number of spaced being removed for duplex entry. Stay tuned. Tuesday, June 28, 2005 7:30 Update: According to the latest reports, small 12 inch Sand Sharks have been taking the bait over the past 24 hours at the Carolina Beach State Park . Lots of Croakers are also biting on shrimp off of H avenue here in Kure Beach. 3:00pm Sun and rain mixed today. No fishing reports at this time. Stay tuned! Other News: 7:30 PM HOTEL ASTOR memorabilia hunters have gathered to pickup pieces of burnt artifacts. From hearsay, the now burnt down structure will be cleared off soon. update: Several reports have come in saying that a couple of large
King Mackerels were caught off the Kure Beach
Fishing Pier. "Fisherman had hooked the King for more than 15 minutes
before landing the 3 1/2 foot beauty", reports one gentleman. 12:30 pm
Heat index has passed 98 degrees today. Fisherman from the great state of
Michigan stopped in for some fishing tips. We suggested to him that he start
after 6 pm tonight. Fishing with shrimp from 8:00 pm until 2:00 am in the next
morning is productive, plus there is less fear of passing out due to hi heat

TOTALLY DESTROYED BY AM FIRE!! 8:00 pm Fire Update: Karen and I rode up to Carolina Beach to see the status of the "Astor Hotel" remains. All smoke and fire appeared to be gone. I am a Captain on the Kure Beach Fire Department. This was the biggest turnout of fire fighters and equipment in my 24 years as a volunteer fire fighter. We are very thankful for all the mutual aid between all the neighboring fire departments. Many of the fire fighters today have ask me to give a special thanks to my wife Karen for getting cold Gator-Aid and bottled water to them in the early pre-dawn hours. "Thanks sweetie!" Stay tuned. Saturday, June 25, 2005 UPDATE 1:00 pm I have been informed by the Kure Beach Fire Department that salt has built up on the electrical transformers. When we get light rains like today, the water mixes with the salt build-up along the insulators creating an electrical pop! This all ways occurred in light rains. During heavy rain showers, the salt build-up washes off before a short has time to take place. 11:45 am At the moment, a good rain shower is falling. Early this today, the weather was cool, cloudy and we had a nice northeast wind blowing. The surf, however, was ruff. Some outdoor water activities were canceled at the NC Aquarium. # 5 and # 6 sinkers are being called for. Treble hooks are in demand. Since the surf is so ruff and foamy, we had several fishermen come in asking for # 4 treble hooks. These guys are wrapping the shrimp around the shaft and down onto the three barbs so the current from the surf would not wash the tinder shrimp meat off the hook. We are sending fishermen south to the bay. We keep losing electrical power so I'm signing off! Stay tuned! Friday, June 24, 2005 Bluefish have been reported being caught off the Kure Beach Fishing Pier today. Gotcha Plugs are thing to have. Of the remaining Motels in our town, all are approaching No Vacancy! Sea water temperature have settled in the low 80's. Summer Flounder, Pompano and Croakers love kind of sea water. Stay tuned! Thursday, June 23, 2005 The big disappointment that hit all fishermen and women from time to time. "Broken rod-ends" :( Having to tell a good hearted fisherman that rod manufactures do not sell just the end of rods is like re-watching the ABC Wide World of Sport sports program and seeing that snow skier crash off the end of the big ski jump, "... and the agony of defeat!" Anyway, the six foot shark at the end of the pier did not mind the medium weight surf rod breaking. The GOOD news is many reputable Rod Manufactures like Silstar, Shakespeare, and Penn have a policy that when this happens, and it will, just mail the entire rod back to the manufacture and they will send back a new rod. Its just that simple! The reason the manufacture does this is one, good business since and kindness and two, the cost at the manufacture level is about 60% of SRP. In other news, I heard a radio commercial today saying that nearly 80% of all shrimp eaten in North Carolina are farmed raised. click here to see May 19, and May 17, 2005. Lots of vacationers are down today. Kure Beach has a new Sea Food Restaurant. It's named, "Jack Mackerel's". Opening day was yesterday. Stay tuned! Wednesday, June 22, 2005 Today, the winds are coming straight up Fort Fisher Boulevard. "That from the South-South West for all you Out-of-Towner's". Other news. Mystery fish caught at Fort Fisher. Two devoted fishermen from upstate have been stopping in and getting their bait this past week. They studied our fish chart with all the pretty fish pictures. The fish they were catching were not on the chart. These mystery fish they were catching looked like a cross between a Spanish Mackerel and a Blue Fish. Who knows! It might be a "Spanish Blue or a Blue Mackerel"? You make the call! Stay tuned! Tuesday, June 21, 2005 10:45 am I talked to a couple of fishermen this morning. The were not catching anything in the surf. The place to be, one said, was about 4 miles off shore. "Spanish Mack11erel are plentiful!" The head boats at Carolina Beach are great for us folks who don't have an easy access to charter a private boat. Now for other old news. This past weekends wind blow seems to be over. Last night I was talking to a local resident. He said that the winds speed did not get over 33 knots and not the 45 maximum gust I reported. He lives six blocks off the ocean and still a cool ole fellow. Stay tuned! Monday, June 20, 2005 10:00 am Well today is the last day of spring 2005. The weather has been fair to wet this past spring and all else in between. The first 2/3 of spring seemed very cool and wet, followed by our normal springtime weather, followed at the end by a couple of weeks of hot and humid flashes. Yesterday's wind out of the northeast is not as strong today. Several fishermen have be very frustrated by this wind. Snows Cut is usually a safe haven for boater during a northeast wind blow. Stay tuned. Sunday, June 19, 2005 8:00 pm A consistently strong northeast-wind has been blowing all day. (NE 25 to 45 knots). Number 5 and number 6 sinkers were the only weighs capable of holding down tackle in surf. Several fishermen called it quits, not because of the heavy surf but the high wind-volume was too exhaustive. Black Drum and Croakers made a good showing in the Cape Fear River at the Fort Fisher Air Base and along the bay side of the Rock Wall past the Fort Fisher Boat Landing. 7:30 am Happy Fathers Day! "Its a Beautiful Morning, la de" as the song goes. We got up early this morning and went and had breakfast at the "Old Pier House Restaurant". A very nice cool-northeast wind was blowing. One business owner said it was like the free gift of AC coming into town. While I was there, I saw a couple of fish being hauled onto the pier. From the distance they looked like Virginia Mullets. The cook in the restaurant said that he has been plugging off shore this past week. He landed several Spanish Mackerel. Other folks are catching Flounder off of Mud Minnows. Stay tuned! Saturday, June 18, 2005 11:45 am This morning, the temperature and humidity has let up. "Oh what a relief it is!" Kure Pier looks as if there are several fishermen fishing from the point just beyond the breakers all the way to the very end. Many reports of Croaker, Virginia Mullets and Sharks (less than 4 feet) have been caught. No-see-ims, the tiny sand gnats are everywhere in the Fort Fisher State Park. Canadian Geese are also seen in the State Park. Stay tuned! Thursday and Friday, June 16 & 17 Irrigation pump failure at our apartments took more time to fix than I had planed. The consecutive days of hi heat and dry air has parched the grass in our yards. The dry grass was beginning to smell like a dry hay field. Now for some fishing reports. Yesterday, a fisherman and his lovely fisher-lady reported they hit it big in first bay. Dozens of good size Croakers were caught on shrimp. Other news. Their friend fished one of Carolina Beach's charter boats. He caught a heap of Spanish Mackerel. Other boaters have reported similar catches. Spanish, Bonita, Grouper and Black Sea Bass. Sorry for this delay. Stay tuned! Wednesday, June 15, 2005 Heat index past 99 degrees today. Today we did not get any fishing reports. There were quite a few folks on Kure Pier fishing. Nice size Virginia Mullets have a habit of running from 9 pm until 4 in the morning this time of year. The surf in front of the Blue Marlin Apartments had lots of vacationers soaking up the sun rays. Sun screen rated 30 + is a must if one stay out for more than 30 minutes. Stay tuned! Tuesday, June 14, 2005 6:45 pm Hot haze day today. Mud Minnows have been catching Flounder along the surf. We see a half a dozen or more long rods at the end of the Kure Beach Fishing pier. That all I can report about today. Last night I went back down to the boat landing for "look see". I could only see the shapes of the building in Southport. The haze would not allow me to make out the individual colors of each building compare to yesterday mornings fantastic view. Stay tuned Monday, June 13, 2005 10:30 am Reports of catching fish have slowed down according to some our customers. Gentleman and crew fishing snows cuts reports a big slowdown in the number of fish caught there. Other news, the combined tides at the south-end boat landing and in the Cape Fear River were extremely low early this morning. So low that more than 80, 3 story homes in Southport and in the Fort Caswell vicinity could be seen very easily from the Fort Fisher boat landing. No fog or haze to block ones view. In some places, the rock wall stood more than five feet above first bay's water line. Extremely hot weather is returning today so use caution! Stay tuned! Sunday, June 12, 2005 1:00 pm HOT-HOT weather has come into town. So far, there has not been many fishermen in today. There has been a few sunbathers in for suntan lotion, surf mats and cool soda water. Stay tuned! Saturday, June 11, 2005 Update: 7:30pm A long over dew rain shower fell hard this afternoon. It lasted about 40 minutes. Since then, things have dried up and folks are out and about. 3:00 pm Here's a story that is not in your everyday adventure. Gotcha plugs, one of the most popular fishing lures of the past 25 years has a new story to tell. Gentlemen catches two Bluefish at the same time on red-headed, white-bodied gotcha plug. When he removed the plug from the second fishes mouth, he notices the tail of another large fish inside the Bluefish. The catch was a fresh catch so he ended up with three fishes on a single cast. Thursday, June 9, 2005 This morning, some of our guest were fishing at the end of Florida Avenue in Carolina Beach. This is where the yacht basin and Intercostals waterway intersects. Plenty of Virginia Mullets, Croakers and Flounder were keeping these good folks occupied. Then coming north, out of Snows Cut, a long 35 - 40 foot twin engine boat made an abrupt high-speed turn into the Carolina Beach yacht basin. Not slowing down and close to shore, the wake pushed several floating docks into the air plus wash one rod and reel of our fishing guest into the water. The gear was recover and sand cleaned out here in our shop, however a good fishing adventure ended. Our guest were upset, but they do plan to return. Stay tuned! Wednesday, June 8, 2005 Black Drum were seen this morning. Hot overcast skies. Words out that there maybe a change in the 2006 Saltwater fishing license. Who knows? Stay tuned Tuesday, June 7, 2005 Due to the inaccuracy of the local weather 7 day forecast, I have decided to remove the graphics' links off our web site. Okay now lets get down to brass taxes. Gentleman reports that Island hopping in the Cape Fear River can reap a bountiful catch of all sorts of game fish. This week, he and his crew departed from the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge. I assume he launched off of Water Street. Traveling south, they stopped at the first Island just past the NC State Ports. Fishing the points of each island, he reports many good size Croakers. So many they release the ones under 10 inches. In the past, he reported Red Fish "Puppy Drum", and Flounder have made his day. I estimated he traveled about 6 to 9 miles down river going from Island to Island. Stay tuned! Monday, June 6, 2005 Today marks 61's anniversary of the D-Day invasion at Normandy, France. Here in Kure Beach, lots of Boaters are off shore and at Snows Cut. Black Drum, Flounder, Virginia Mullets and Trout are a stable fish for Snows Cut. Spanish and King Mackerel are the most pursued fishes for off shore boaters. Seas are small, less than 2 feet. A heavy heat wave mixed in with hi humidity has come into town. Stay tuned. June 4, 2005 Not as crowed this weekend as last weekend. Nice sized Puppy Drum, Pompanos, Bluefish and Virginia Mullets did make the news here in the shop. Lots of sun bathers on the beach and there were plenty of folks on Kure Pier. Life guards were on the watch as several Kayakers ventured out beyond the 4 foot breakers. Stay tuned! June 2, 2005 Update 5:00 pm Longtime fisherman from upstate returns only to catch large Pompano and Virginia Mullets at his favorite fishing spot in 300 north block of Atlantic Avenue of Kure Beach. Yesterday he cast his favorite # 2 short shank hooks out into the windy surf. Thirty minutes later he would return to find a Virginia Mullet or a large Pompano on his tackle! I assume he uses sand flees and shrimp for bait. That is what he is accustom to use. 10:00 am Fishermen reports many large size Sheephead fish were caught during yesterday's big north east wind blow. Mud Minnows were the choice bait. This morning, we had very heavy rain showers. Looking at the live weather radar, the massive rain showers continued from Kure Beach to Norfolk, Virginia. Stay tuned! June 1, 2005 Update: 7:15 pm, A very strong northeast gale wind has blown into town. Oceans waves are 4 to 6 feet in front of the Blue Marlin Apartments. Very ruff seas.
